Why Choose Natura® Moldable Durahesive® Barrier
This barrier combines moldable convenience that eliminates cutting and measuring with Durahesive® extended-wear technology specifically engineered to resist breakdown from liquid or high-output effluent. The moldable "turtleneck" seal creates 360° protection around the stoma to prevent undermining leaks, while the erosion-resistant Durahesive® formula maintains adhesion longer than standard hydrocolloids—even when exposed to constant moisture from ileostomy or urostomy output. The secure Natura® coupling features an audible "click" for confident pouch attachment, and the scissors-free design speeds barrier changes while reducing anxiety about proper sizing.

Understanding Durahesive® Technology
What is Durahesive®?
Durahesive® is ConvaTec's advanced hydrocolloid formulation specifically engineered for ostomies with liquid or high-output effluent:
Enhanced Erosion Resistance: The formulation resists breakdown when exposed to liquid output—maintaining structural integrity and adhesion longer than standard hydrocolloids including Stomahesive®.
Moisture Management: Can absorb and manage higher moisture levels without losing adhesive properties—critical for liquid ileostomy or continuous urostomy output.
Extended Wear Time: Typical wear time of 5-7 days even with liquid output, compared to 3-5 days for standard hydrocolloids in the same conditions.
Skin Protection: Creates reliable barrier between caustic liquid effluent and vulnerable peristomal skin, reducing chemical irritation and breakdown.
Adhesion Stability: Maintains consistent adhesion throughout wear period despite constant moisture exposure—prevents premature edge lift or erosion.
Durahesive® vs. Stomahesive®
Durahesive® (This Product):
- Engineered for liquid/high-output effluent
- Superior erosion resistance in high-moisture situations
- Longer wear time with liquid output
- Best for ileostomy and urostomy
- Slightly higher cost but extended wear compensates
- Essential for challenging liquid output situations
Stomahesive®:
- General-purpose hydrocolloid formula
- Adequate for formed to semi-formed output
- Standard wear time with typical output
- Best for colostomy with formed output
- More economical for lower-moisture situations
- Good baseline option for standard needs
Choosing Between Them:
- Choose Durahesive® if: You have ileostomy with liquid output, urostomy, high-output ostomy, or experience frequent barrier erosion
- Choose Stomahesive® if: You have colostomy with formed output, lower-output situations, or standard moisture conditions
Many ileostomy users find Durahesive® essential for adequate wear time, while colostomy users often do well with standard Stomahesive®.
Understanding Moldable Technology
How Moldable Barriers Work:
Unlike traditional cut-to-fit barriers requiring scissors, moldable barriers feature a soft, pliable opening that shapes by hand:
The Material: The inner ring is extra-soft, elastic hydrocolloid that stretches and molds without tearing or losing adhesive properties.
The Process: By rolling or pressing the opening with fingers, users create a custom-sized aperture matching their specific stoma—round, oval, or irregular.
The "Turtleneck" Effect: When properly molded, the opening creates a gentle rolled edge extending slightly upward around the stoma base, like a turtleneck collar. This provides extra protection against undermining—critical for liquid output.
Advantages Over Cut-to-Fit:
- No scissors, measuring guides, or templates needed
- Faster barrier changes (no cutting time)
- More forgiving—can remold if not perfect first time
- Adapts to slight daily variations in stoma size
- Safer for users with vision or dexterity challenges
- More convenient for travel
Natura® 45mm (1¾") Coupling System
This barrier uses ConvaTec's Natura® 45mm (1¾") coupling—one of the most common flange sizes.
Compatible With:
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm drainable pouches (essential for ileostomy)
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm urostomy pouches (for urinary diversion)
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm closed pouches
- All Natura® 45mm pouch styles
NOT Compatible With:
- Other ConvaTec flange sizes (57mm, 70mm)
- Other manufacturers' systems (Hollister, Coloplast, etc.)
- Hollister New Image™ 1¾" (different coupling mechanism)
⚠ Important: While both ConvaTec and Hollister make 1¾" (45mm) flanges, they use different coupling mechanisms and are NOT interchangeable.
Usage & Application
Preparing the Barrier:
- Remove barrier from packaging
- Warm barrier between hands for 30-60 seconds to make moldable opening more pliable
- The warmer the barrier, the easier it molds
Molding the Opening:
- Examine your stoma and estimate its size (must be within 7/8"–1¼" range)
- Place fingers inside the moldable opening
- Gently stretch and roll the opening outward to enlarge it to approximately match stoma size
- For oval stomas, stretch more in one direction to create oval shape
- Create opening slightly larger than stoma (about ⅛" or 2-3mm gap all around)
- If opening becomes too large, press edges inward to reduce size
- Can remold multiple times until desired fit is achieved
Application:
- Cleanse and dry peristomal skin thoroughly
- Remove paper backing from barrier
- Center molded opening over stoma, ensuring ⅛" gap around entire circumference
- Press barrier onto skin, starting at stoma and working outward
- Smooth barrier with hand for 30-60 seconds, allowing body heat to activate adhesion
- Pay special attention to edges, pressing firmly
- The moldable opening should form gentle "turtleneck" collar around stoma base
Coupling the Pouch:
- Align pouch flange with barrier coupling ring
- Press around entire ring perimeter until you hear/feel audible "click"
- Gently tug pouch to confirm secure attachment
- If using belt, thread through belt tabs and adjust for comfortable support
For Liquid Output Users:
- Empty pouch when ⅓ to ½ full—don't let it get too heavy
- Monitor barrier edges more frequently with liquid output
- Watch for early signs of erosion or undermining
- Consider protective barrier strips or paste for extra security if needed
When to Replace:
- Typical wear time: 5-7 days with liquid output (longer than standard hydrocolloids)
- Replace if barrier edges begin to lift or erode
- Replace if leakage or undermining occurs
- Replace if skin irritation develops
- Some users achieve longer wear with Durahesive® than they did with previous products
Moldable Range: 7/8"–1¼" (22–32mm)
Understanding the Range:
Minimum Opening (7/8" / 22mm):
- Smallest stoma size this barrier accommodates
- Can be molded down to this size from the starting diameter
Maximum Opening (1¼" / 32mm):
- Largest stoma size this barrier accommodates
- Cannot be stretched beyond this diameter safely
- If your stoma measures larger than 1¼", you need a different product
Finding Your Size:
- Measure stoma at widest point using stoma measuring guide
- Stoma must measure between 7/8" and 1¼" to use this product
- Mold opening slightly larger than actual stoma (about ⅛" gap)
- If stoma is larger or smaller, consult ostomy nurse for alternatives
