      Bacteriostatic Water for Injection USP is a sterile, nonpyrogenic pharmaceutical diluent containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, equivalent to 9 mg/mL, as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is supplied in a multi-dose plastic vial from which repeated withdrawals may be made using proper aseptic technique.

      Intended Use

      For diluting or dissolving compatible drugs for intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection only when Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is identified as the correct vehicle by the medication manufacturer, pharmacist, prescriber or other qualified healthcare professional.

      Important Safety Information

      • Not for use in newborns or neonates because the product contains benzyl alcohol.
      • Do not inject Bacteriostatic Water for Injection by itself.
      • Intravenous administration without an added solute may cause hemolysis.
      • Not intended for fluid replacement.
      • Do not use for epidural or spinal-anesthesia procedures.
      • Some medications may be incompatible with this diluent or with benzyl alcohol.
      • Use aseptic technique for every vial entry and withdrawal.
      • Do not use unless the solution is clear and the vial seal is intact.

      Storage and Handling

      Store at controlled room temperature, 20–25°C, unless otherwise stated on the Canadian product label supplied. Follow the medication manufacturer’s directions for the correct diluent, volume, concentration, mixing method, route, administration rate and storage of the final preparation.
