The Orthex SOPHIA 38 Medium Orthopedic Mattress is a 425 lb Twin XL three-layer foam mattress with a gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, bamboo viscose antibacterial cover, and medium-firm orthopedic support for adjustable homecare beds.

Single-layer foam mattresses — regardless of how the foam is specified — cannot simultaneously optimize the three distinct performance requirements of a therapeutic mattress for extended homecare and rehabilitation use: pressure redistribution through surface contouring, structural support for spinal alignment through mid-depth resistance, and long-term dimensional stability through a foundation that resists compression set over months to years of daily use. Each of these requirements favours different foam properties that conflict with one another in a homogeneous single layer — a foam soft enough to contour around bony prominences for pressure redistribution is typically too soft to maintain the spinal alignment posture over time, while a foam dense enough to maintain dimensional stability over years of bariatric loading is typically too firm to provide the contouring deformation that reduces bony prominence pressure. The SOPHIA Medium resolves this conflict through the three-layer architecture: a gel-infused viscoelastic comfort layer at the surface, a high-resilience intermediate layer, and a high-density polyurethane foundation layer — each optimized independently for its specific function within the mattress system.
The gel-infused viscoelastic memory foam top layer provides the body-contouring pressure redistribution function of the system. This layer is the patient contact zone — it responds to body heat and weight with the characteristic slow-response deformation of viscoelastic foam, conforming to the individual contours of the shoulders, waist, hips, and heels to distribute contact force across a greater surface area and reduce peak interface pressure at bony prominences. The gel infusion moderates the heat retention characteristic of standard memory foam, maintaining a cooler skin contact surface during extended lying periods by conducting heat away from the interface more efficiently than foam alone. This gel layer is where the clinical pressure redistribution benefit of the mattress is delivered, and it is specifically engineered to perform this function without requiring the excessive depth and softness that would compromise the spinal alignment support of the system as a whole.
The high-resilience middle layer performs the mechanical function that most single-layer mattresses cannot provide — the spring-back resistance that supports spinal alignment and provides the push-off platform for patient repositioning. High-resilience foam is not the same as firm foam: resilience describes the ability of the foam to recover rapidly from compression, returning quickly to its original shape after load is removed rather than slowly recovering as viscoelastic foam does. This rapid recovery means that the high-resilience layer provides dynamic support — it actively pushes back against the patient's body weight with consistent resistance across any lying position, maintaining the lumbar and thoracic spinal curves in the positions the musculoskeletal system requires for comfort during extended rest. For patients transitioning between side-lying, supine, and semi-reclined positions in an adjustable hospital bed, the high-resilience layer ensures that the mattress supports the new position's spinal geometry immediately rather than slowly conforming to it over several minutes as a deep viscoelastic layer would.
The high-density polyurethane foam base layer is the dimensional stability foundation of the system — the layer that determines the service life of the mattress as a whole and that supports the weight capacity rating of 425 pounds across the full Twin XL surface. High-density polyurethane foam achieves its compression set resistance through the density of the foam cell matrix — a greater mass of polyurethane per cubic foot of foam volume means more cell walls per unit area resisting compression, a higher collective elastic recovery force, and a longer period before cumulative fatigue reduces elastic recovery below the threshold of effective support. For a mattress warranted for 10 years of orthopedic support performance, the base layer density specification is the most critical engineering parameter — the comfort layer softens and adapts with use, the resilience layer manages repositioning dynamics, but the base layer's density determines whether the overall system maintains its therapeutic geometry over the service period the warranty covers.
✓ Adjustable homecare hospital beds where patients require long-term therapeutic support with medium-firm orthopedic spinal alignment ✓ Long-term care facility bed replacement for residents requiring comfortable therapeutic foam with pressure redistribution and posture support ✓ Post-operative surgical recovery at home where medium-firm support assists patient repositioning and edge-of-bed mobility during recovery ✓ Spinal conditions including lumbar disc disease, osteoarthritis, and post-spinal surgery recovery requiring sustained neutral spine positioning ✓ Hip and knee replacement rehabilitation where medium-firm support facilitates the edge-sitting and transfer activities of post-operative mobility ✓ Stroke and neurological rehabilitation patients during the home recovery phase requiring both spinal alignment support and surface pressure relief ✓ Bariatric homecare patients up to 425 pounds requiring therapeutic foam with compression-set-resistant base support ✓ Patients with fibromyalgia and widespread pain conditions requiring a comfortable medium-firm surface that reduces pressure concentration ✓ Cancer patients recovering at home during treatment cycles who require therapeutic comfort and pressure redistribution during extended bed rest ✓ Patients with sensitive skin or latex allergies requiring a hypoallergenic bamboo cover contact surface ✓ Homecare environments where bamboo viscose moisture management is preferred over synthetic waterproof cover materials ✓ AADL and insurance-funded homecare programs where a therapeutic orthopedic mattress replacement is an authorized equipment benefit
Confirming Layer Orientation and Installation The SOPHIA Medium's three-layer construction is factory-assembled with the gel-infused memory foam comfort layer as the top patient contact surface. Confirm the correct orientation before installing on the bed frame — the memory foam layer should be uppermost, and the high-density foam base should contact the bed frame deck. Some foam mattresses ship with reversible orientation, but the SOPHIA's comfort layer should not be reversed — placing the high-density base layer as the patient contact surface would produce a hard unsupported sleeping surface that does not deliver the therapeutic profile the mattress is designed for. Position the mattress centered on the bed frame with the bamboo viscose cover surface facing up and all side seams correctly seated before applying bed linens.

Very welcoming and informative. We went in to rent a Walker for my mom to see if she would use it. They had no rentals left so he gave us a brand new one on rental. Highly recommend this company for all your ADL needs.

Excellent experience - website faithfully represented what was in stock (which hasn't always been my experience with other vendors sadly), and local shipping was really fast - ordered on the weekend, received it on Monday in my case. Thank you for being
