3D polymer foam absorbs moderate-to-high exudate with soft silicone border. Breathable, bacteria-proof backing maintains moist wound environment. Pain-free dressing changes.

    • Why 3D Polymer Foam with Soft Silicone Adhesive

Effective exudate management requires more than simple absorption—the dressing must lock fluid within its structure to prevent rewetting the wound bed (which delays healing) and lateral spreading that causes peri-wound maceration. Biatain's 3D polymer foam features a unique three-dimensional structure with vertical channels that rapidly pull exudate away from the wound surface and lock it deep within the foam matrix. This superior fluid handling maintains the optimal moist wound environment that promotes autolytic debridement and cellular migration, while keeping the wound surface itself relatively dry. The soft silicone adhesive border provides secure fixation without forming aggressive chemical bonds to skin proteins—during removal, the silicone releases cleanly without stripping fragile skin or disrupting newly formed tissue. For wounds with moderate to heavy exudate requiring frequent assessment or when surrounding skin is compromised, the combination of advanced foam technology and gentle silicone adhesive delivers effective healing support with minimal trauma.

      Key Features

      • 3D polymer foam core: vertical wicking rapidly absorbs and locks exudate
      • Soft silicone adhesive border: secure fixation with pain-free, atraumatic removal
      • Moderate-to-high absorbency: handles significant drainage volumes effectively
      • Breathable backing: bacteria-proof and waterproof film allows vapor transmission
      • 5″ × 5″ size: provides adequate coverage with border overlap
      • Superior conformability: flexible foam conforms to body contours and wound bed
      • Moist wound environment: maintains optimal humidity for healing
      • Shower-friendly: waterproof backing allows bathing with dressing in place
      • Extended wear time: up to 7 days depending on exudate levels
      • Non-sensitizing materials: gentle formulation for sensitive skin
      • Latex-free construction: safe for latex-sensitive patients
      • Box of 10: economical supply for ongoing wound care

      Benefits

      • Effectively manages moderate-to-heavy exudate preventing leakage and maceration
      • Reduces pain and trauma during dressing changes for patient comfort
      • Superior fluid locking prevents rewetting and maintains dry wound surface
      • Protects peri-wound skin from adhesive damage and moisture exposure
      • Conforms to difficult anatomical areas (heels, elbows, sacrum)
      • Extends wear time compared to traditional dressings, reducing change frequency
      • Suitable for use under compression therapy for venous leg ulcers

      Clinical Applications

Leg ulcers: venous, arterial, or mixed etiology with moderate-to-heavy drainage
Pressure injuries: Stage II-IV pressure ulcers with significant exudate
Diabetic foot ulcers: neuropathic or ischemic ulcers with moderate drainage
Post-operative wounds: surgical sites with ongoing exudate
Donor sites: skin graft harvest areas with moderate-to-heavy drainage
Traumatic wounds: lacerations, abrasions with significant exudate
Fragile skin wounds: elderly patients requiring gentle dressing changes
Compression therapy: compatible with compression wraps for venous ulcers

      Usage & Application

For healthcare professionals and trained caregivers managing moderate-to-heavy exudate acute or chronic wounds in hospital, long-term care, or home healthcare settings.

Wound assessment: Biatain Silicone is designed for wounds with moderate to high exudate. For wounds with light drainage, consider Biatain Silicone Lite. For very heavy exudate, consider layering or more frequent changes.

      To apply:

      1. Cleanse the wound per facility protocol using appropriate wound cleanser
      2. Pat peri-wound skin completely dry—silicone adhesive requires dry skin for optimal fixation
      3. Remove any devitalized tissue per facility debridement protocols
      4. Select dressing size that provides at least 1 inch (2-3 cm) overlap of intact skin on all sides of the wound
      5. Remove the dressing from sterile packaging
      6. Remove the release liner(s) from the silicone adhesive border
      7. Center the foam pad over the wound—do not stretch the dressing
      8. Gently smooth the silicone border onto surrounding skin, working from the center outward
      9. Avoid applying tension or stretching during application
      10. Ensure the border adheres completely with no lifted edges or gaps
      11. The 3D foam structure will immediately begin wicking exudate vertically into the dressing

      For deep wounds or cavities:

      • Biatain Silicone can be used to cover cavity wounds that have been appropriately filled with cavity filler products
      • Do not attempt to pack or insert the bordered foam dressing into deep cavities
      • Use appropriate non-bordered foam or cavity dressings for wound filling

      Wear time and monitoring:

      • Inspect dressing regularly (daily minimum in healthcare settings)
      • Monitor for:
        • Exudate visible approaching dressing border (indicates saturation)
        • Leakage or strike-through
        • Border adhesion failure or lifted edges
        • Signs of infection (increased pain, odor, purulence)
      • Change dressing when:
        • Exudate reaches within 0.5 cm of the dressing border
        • Leakage occurs at dressing edges
        • Border adhesion fails
        • Dressing becomes soiled from external sources
        • Per routine schedule (typically every 3-7 days)
      • Moderate exudate wounds: typically 3-5 days wear time
      • High exudate wounds: may require every 1-2 days initially
      • Do not leave in place longer than 7 days even if not saturated

      To remove:

      1. Gently lift one corner of the silicone border
      2. Support the skin with one hand while slowly peeling the dressing parallel to the skin surface
      3. The soft silicone should release cleanly and painlessly
      4. If any resistance is felt, pause and approach from a different angle
      5. The dressing should come away without causing pain or skin stripping
      6. Cleanse any residual exudate from surrounding skin
      7. Assess wound for signs of healing progression

      Use with compression therapy:

      • Biatain Silicone is compatible with compression bandaging for venous leg ulcers
      • Apply the foam dressing first, then apply compression wrap over it
      • The foam provides cushioning and absorbs exudate while compression addresses venous insufficiency
      • Monitor compression wrap placement to ensure it doesn't displace dressing

Shower/bathing: The waterproof, bacteria-proof backing allows patients to shower with the dressing in place. Pat dry after bathing. Avoid prolonged water immersion (baths, swimming) as this may compromise adhesion.

      Important notes:

      • For moderate-to-high exudate only—use Lite version for light exudate
      • Not suitable for dry wounds or wounds with minimal drainage
      • Not for use on infected wounds without appropriate antimicrobial therapy
      • Not for third-degree burns or full-thickness wounds with exposed bone, tendon, or muscle
      • Monitor peri-wound skin for maceration—if present, change dressing more frequently
      • If exudate leakage occurs repeatedly, reassess exudate level and consider more absorbent alternatives
