Why Choose Natura® Durahesive® Skin Barrier
This barrier combines Durahesive® extended-wear technology specifically engineered to resist breakdown from liquid or high-output effluent with a tape-free border that's ideal for sensitive, fragile, or frequently irritated peristomal skin. The "turtleneck" swelling seal occurs when Durahesive® absorbs moisture and gently expands around the stoma base, creating 360° protection against undermining leaks. The 38mm (1½") flange size provides a compact, lightweight option for smaller stomas or petite body frames, while the secure Natura® coupling features an audible "click" for confident pouch attachment.

- Users requiring gentlest possible barrier edge
Smaller Stomas or Body Frames:
- Stomas measuring under ⅞" requiring smaller flange
- Petite individuals where 38mm provides better fit
- Pediatric or adolescent ostomy patients
- Users who find larger flanges too bulky
Flush or Retracted Stomas with Liquid Output:
- Combination of challenging anatomy AND liquid output
- Turtleneck seal helps prevent undermining

Understanding Durahesive® Technology
What is Durahesive®?
Durahesive® is ConvaTec's advanced hydrocolloid formulation specifically engineered for ostomies with liquid or high-output effluent:
Enhanced Erosion Resistance: The formulation resists breakdown when exposed to liquid output—maintaining structural integrity and adhesion longer than standard hydrocolloids including Stomahesive®.
Moisture Management: Can absorb and manage higher moisture levels without losing adhesive properties—critical for liquid ileostomy or high-output situations.
Extended Wear Time: Typical wear time of 5-7 days even with liquid output, compared to 3-5 days for standard hydrocolloids in the same conditions.
Skin Protection: Creates reliable barrier between caustic liquid effluent and vulnerable peristomal skin, reducing chemical irritation and breakdown.
Controlled Swelling: Absorbs moisture and swells in a controlled manner to create the protective "turtleneck" seal without compromising adhesion.
Understanding "Turtleneck" Seal Technology
How the Turtleneck Seal Works:
As the Durahesive® hydrocolloid barrier is exposed to moisture from stoma output, it undergoes a controlled swelling process:
Step 1 - Initial Application: Barrier adheres flat against peristomal skin with opening at stoma base.
Step 2 - Moisture Exposure: As liquid output contacts the barrier edge around the stoma, the hydrocolloid begins absorbing moisture.
Step 3 - Controlled Swelling: The inner edge of the barrier swells gently upward and inward, creating a raised collar or "turtleneck" around the stoma base.
Step 4 - Protective Seal: This raised collar creates a physical barrier that prevents liquid output from tracking horizontally under the barrier (undermining).
Benefits:
- Self-adjusting seal that adapts during wear
- Particularly effective against liquid undermining
- Works continuously throughout wear period
- No user action required—happens automatically
No Tape Border vs. Tape Border
No Tape Border (This Product):
- All-hydrocolloid construction
- Gentlest on sensitive skin
- More flexible and conforming
- Better for fragile or elderly skin
- Ideal for tape sensitivity or allergies
- May have slightly less edge security than tape
Tape Border:
- Hydrocolloid center with adhesive tape edge
- Additional edge security and adhesion
- Better for very active users or swimmers
- More secure on challenging contours
- Not suitable for tape-sensitive skin
Choosing Between Them:
Choose No Tape Border (This Product) if:
- You have sensitive, fragile, or thin skin
- You experience tape irritation or allergies
- You prioritize gentle removal
- You have adequate adhesion with hydrocolloid alone
- You have history of skin tears or stripping
Choose Tape Border if:
- You need maximum edge security
- You're very active or swim frequently
- You have very uneven peristomal contours
- You have no tape sensitivities
- You prioritize adhesion over gentleness
Durahesive® vs. Stomahesive®
Durahesive® (This Product):
- Engineered for liquid/high-output effluent
- White color
- Superior erosion resistance in high-moisture situations
- Longer wear time with liquid output (5-7 days typical)
- Best for ileostomy and high-output situations
- Turtleneck swelling seal
- Essential for challenging liquid output
Stomahesive®:
- General-purpose hydrocolloid formula
- Tan/beige color
- Adequate for formed to semi-formed output
- Standard wear time (3-5 days typical)
- Best for colostomy with formed output
- Good baseline option for standard needs
- More economical for lower-moisture situations
Many ileostomy users find Durahesive® essential for adequate wear time.
Natura® 38mm (1½") Coupling System
This barrier uses ConvaTec's Natura® 38mm (1½") coupling—the smallest common flange size.
Compatible With:
- ConvaTec Natura® 38mm drainable pouches (for ileostomy/colostomy)
- ConvaTec Natura® 38mm closed pouches
- ConvaTec Natura® 38mm urostomy pouches
- All Natura® 38mm pouch styles
NOT Compatible With:
- Other ConvaTec flange sizes (45mm, 57mm, 70mm)
- Other manufacturers' systems (Hollister, Coloplast, etc.)
- Larger Natura® pouches
38mm vs. Larger Flanges:
38mm (1½") - This Size:
- Smallest common size
- For smaller stomas (typically under ⅞")
- More compact, lightweight
- Better for petite body frames
- Less bulky, more discreet
45mm (1¾") - Most Common:
- Standard size for average stomas
- More adhesive surface
- Fits stomas up to ~1⅛"
Larger (57mm+):
- For larger stomas
- Maximum adhesive surface
Your barrier flange size determines which pouches you can use—they must match.
Usage & Application
Preparing Skin:
- Cleanse peristomal skin with mild soap and water
- Pat completely dry—any moisture reduces adhesion
- Assess skin condition before each barrier application
- Apply skin prep or protective products if recommended by clinician
Applying the Barrier:
- Remove paper backing from barrier
- Warm barrier between hands for 15-30 seconds for better conforming
- Center barrier opening over stoma (ensure proper sizing—approximately ⅛" gap around stoma)
- Press barrier onto skin, starting at stoma and working outward
- Smooth with hand for 30-60 seconds, allowing body heat to activate adhesion
- Pay special attention to edges—press firmly all around perimeter
- No tape edge makes application simpler with fewer potential air bubbles
Coupling the Pouch:
- Align pouch flange with barrier coupling ring
- Press around entire ring perimeter until you hear/feel audible "click"
- Gently tug pouch to confirm secure attachment
- If using belt, thread through belt tabs and adjust
For Liquid Output Users:
- Empty pouch when ⅓ to ½ full—don't let it get too heavy
- Monitor barrier edges more frequently with liquid output
- Watch for signs of erosion or undermining
- The turtleneck seal develops over first few hours of wear
- Durahesive® may feel slightly different than standard hydrocolloids initially
Daily Monitoring:
- Check barrier edges daily for signs of lifting or erosion
- Monitor peristomal skin condition when changing barriers
- Watch for early signs of leakage or undermining
- Assess if barrier size remains appropriate
When to Replace:
- Typical wear time: 5-7 days with liquid output
- Replace if barrier edges begin to lift or erode
- Replace if leakage or undermining occurs
- Replace if skin irritation develops
- Some users achieve longer wear with Durahesive® than previous products
Gentle Removal:
- Support skin with one hand while gently peeling barrier with other
- Work slowly—no tape edge makes removal gentler but still requires care
- Use adhesive remover if needed for comfortable removal
- Cleanse skin thoroughly after removal
- Assess skin condition before applying new barrier
