The Bard Biocath™ Foley features a hydrogel coating that hydrates on placement to create a lubricious, low-friction surface—designed to reduce urethral irritation and ease insertion and withdrawal for routine catheterization.

    • Why Choose Bard Biocath 2-Way Foley Hydrogel-Coated 14Fr 5cc

Standard latex and silicone Foley catheters have inherent surface friction that creates resistance during insertion and sustained contact with the urethral mucosa throughout the dwell period. In short-term catheterisation, this is tolerable. In longer-term catheterisation — days to weeks — sustained urethral mucosal friction from the catheter surface contributes to irritation, inflammation, catheter encrustation, and patient discomfort during catheter exchanges and dwell. Hydrogel coating addresses this by creating a highly lubricious water-absorbing surface layer that significantly reduces the catheter's coefficient of friction against the urethral mucosa — both during insertion and during the dwell period. The Biocath hydrogel coating is designed to maintain its lubricating properties throughout the catheter's recommended dwell period rather than degrading rapidly after insertion. The 2-way design provides the standard Foley configuration: one drainage lumen and one balloon inflation channel. 14Fr at 5cc balloon is the smaller adult calibre for patients where reduced urethral trauma is clinically indicated. Confirm sterility, length, and tip style by exact SKU. Insertion and ongoing care must follow sterile technique and healthcare provider instructions.

      Key Features

✔ Hydrogel coating for reduced urethral friction during insertion and dwell

✔ 2-way design — drainage lumen plus 5cc retention balloon inflation channel

✔ 14Fr smaller adult calibre for reduced urethral trauma

✔ 5cc retention balloon for standard adult bladder retention

✔ Compatible with urinary drainage bags, catheter valves, and securement devices

✔ Confirm sterility, length, and tip style by exact SKU before dispensing

      Benefits

✔ Hydrogel surface reduces urethral mucosal friction during insertion and catheter dwell

✔ May reduce urethral irritation and discomfort during longer-term catheterisation

✔ 14Fr calibre minimises urethral trauma for sensitive or compromised urethral anatomy

✔ 2-way design provides standard drainage and balloon retention function

✔ Bard Biocath is a widely recognised clinical hydrogel catheter option

      Clinical & Typical Applications

✔ Longer-term indwelling catheterisation where urethral comfort and friction reduction are priorities

✔ Patients with urethral sensitivity or previous catheter-related urethral irritation

✔ Standard bladder drainage requiring 14Fr smaller-calibre hydrogel catheter

✔ Post-surgical catheterisation where reduced insertion trauma is clinically appropriate

✔ Patients transitioning from standard silicone or latex Foley to hydrogel format

      Usage & Care

Catheter insertion must be performed using sterile technique by or under the direction of a qualified healthcare professional. Activate the hydrogel coating by wetting the catheter surface with sterile water or saline before insertion per manufacturer instructions — do not use oil-based lubricants. Inflate the 5cc balloon only after confirming bladder placement. Secure with a catheter securement device to reduce urethral traction during dwell. Maintain a closed drainage system. Change per the manufacturer's recommended dwell interval or clinical protocol. Follow CAUTI prevention protocols throughout dwell.
