This flat New Image™ Flextend® barrier delivers erosion-resistant extended-wear adhesion for regular or protruding stomas—with cut-to-fit sizing up to 1¼″ and secure 1¾″ coupling for everyday reliability.

    • Why Choose New Image™ Flextend® Flat Barrier

Flextend® Extended-Wear Technology: Unlike standard hydrocolloid barriers that may break down after 2-4 days, Flextend® is engineered to resist erosion from output, moisture, and skin oils—supporting multi-day wear (typically 3-7 days). This means fewer barrier changes, reduced skin trauma from frequent removal, and better cost-per-day value even though the initial barrier cost may be higher.

Flat Profile for Stable Stomas: This barrier features a flat (non-convex) profile designed for regular or protruding stomas on relatively even peristomal surfaces. If your stoma sits at or above skin level and your abdomen is relatively smooth around the stoma, a flat barrier provides comfortable, reliable adhesion without unnecessary pressure. The 1¾″ (45mm) coupling offers a compact, low-profile design perfect for smaller to medium stomas.

      Key Features & Benefits

      • Flextend® extended-wear hydrocolloid resists erosion and breakdown—supports multi-day wear (3-7 days typical)
      • Cut-to-fit opening up to 1¼″ (32 mm) for precise, chair-side customization to your stoma size
      • Flat (non-convex) profile designed for regular or protruding stomas on even peristomal surfaces
      • 1¾″ (45 mm) New Image™ coupling snaps securely to matching 45mm New Image™ pouches (drainable, closed, or urostomy)
      • Compact, low-profile design comfortable under clothing and during movement
      • Two-piece system convenience—change pouches throughout the day without removing the barrier
      • Latex-free construction; sterile, single-patient use

      Clinical Applications

      Best For:

      • Regular or protruding stomas that sit at or above skin level
      • Even, relatively flat peristomal surfaces without significant creases or softness
      • Patients with smaller to medium stomas (up to 1¼″ diameter)
      • Users needing extended wear time (3-7 days) to reduce frequency of barrier changes
      • Active patients requiring durable adhesion that resists breakdown during movement
      • Situations where reducing barrier changes benefits skin health

⚠ Important: This is a FLAT (non-convex) barrier. If you have a retracted or flush stoma, or if flat barriers consistently fail to maintain a seal, consult with an ostomy nurse about trying a convex barrier instead.

      Usage & Application

      Sizing & Cutting:

      1. Measure your stoma diameter at its widest point
      2. This barrier accommodates stomas up to 1¼″ (32mm)
      3. Cut the barrier opening 2-3 mm (about ⅛″) larger than your stoma to allow for slight swelling
      4. Cut carefully with sharp scissors, creating smooth, rounded edges (no sharp corners)
      5. For oval stomas, create a custom template and trace onto barrier backing

      Skin Preparation:

      1. Clean peristomal skin thoroughly with water (avoid soaps with oils or moisturizers)
      2. Pat skin completely dry—no moisture or oils should remain
      3. Trim hair if necessary (clip close or shave; don't wax)
      4. Ensure skin is at room temperature (not sweaty)

      Application:

      1. Warm the barrier between your hands for 30-60 seconds to activate adhesive
      2. Remove backing paper carefully
      3. Center the cut opening over your stoma
      4. Apply from bottom up, pressing firmly from center outward
      5. Press around the entire barrier, paying special attention to edges
      6. Hold hand warmth over the barrier for 1-2 minutes to enhance adhesion
      7. Attach compatible 1¾″ (45mm) New Image™ pouch and verify secure coupling

      Wear Time & Monitoring:

      • Typical wear time: 3-7 days with Flextend® extended-wear formula
      • Empty pouch when ⅓ to ½ full to prevent weight from stressing the seal
      • Monitor barrier edges daily for signs of lifting or loosening
      • Check hydrocolloid for erosion or color changes (darkening may indicate breakdown)
      • Replace barrier if you notice:
        • Leakage under the barrier
        • Itching, burning, or discomfort
        • Edges lifting more than ¼ inch
        • Visible erosion or breakdown of adhesive

      Removal:

      1. Support skin with one hand while gently lifting barrier edge with the other
      2. Peel slowly, continuing to support skin to prevent trauma
      3. Use adhesive remover wipes if needed for comfortable removal
      4. Clean and assess skin before applying new barrier

      1¾″ (45mm) Coupling Size Context

The 1¾″ (45mm) coupling is one of the smaller New Image™ coupling sizes, offering several advantages:

      Advantages of 45mm Coupling:

      • More compact/discreet profile under clothing
      • Lighter weight than larger couplings
      • Perfect for smaller stomas (up to ~1¼″)
      • Less material against skin for comfort
      • Ideal for thinner body types or smaller torsos

      New Image™ Coupling Size Range:

      • 1¾″ (45mm) — Smallest; for stomas up to ~1″-1¼″
      • 2¼″ (57mm) — Standard; for stomas up to ~1½″
      • 2¾″ (70mm) — Medium-large; for stomas up to ~2½″
      • 3½″ (89mm) — Large; for stomas up to ~4″
      • 4″ (102mm) — Extra-large; for stomas over 4″

      Cut-to-Fit Range: Up to 1¼″ (32mm)

This barrier's maximum 1¼″ (32mm) opening is designed for smaller stomas:

      If Your Stoma Is:

      • ≤ 1¼″ (32mm): This barrier is appropriate—cut to your size
      • > 1¼″ (32mm): Choose a barrier with a larger cut-to-fit range

      Sizing Tips:

      • Measure your stoma when it's relaxed (not active/pushing)
      • Account for slight swelling throughout the day
      • Cut 2-3mm larger than measured size
      • If your stoma varies significantly in size, choose a barrier with more margin
