The Yankauer Suction Handle is a rigid large-bore oral suction device that removes fluids, secretions, blood, and debris from the airway — connecting to standard suction tubing and machines for emergency, surgical, and home suction therapy.

    • Why Choose the Yankauer Suction Handle

Maintaining a clear airway is a primary clinical priority across a wide range of care settings, and the Yankauer suction handle is one of the most widely used tools for achieving it. Its rigid curved design gives the clinician or caregiver precise directional control during suctioning — unlike flexible suction catheters, the Yankauer holds its shape and can be guided to specific areas of the oral cavity and oropharynx without collapsing under the negative pressure of the suction machine. The large-bore lumen and bulb tip with side holes allow rapid clearance of thick secretions, blood, vomit, and debris that smaller catheters cannot manage efficiently, while the side-hole configuration distributes suction force around the tip rather than concentrating it at a single point — reducing the risk of mucosal trauma during repeated passes. Available in vented (thumb-control) versions, the handle allows the clinician to interrupt suction without disconnecting the tubing by simply covering or releasing the vent port, giving moment-to-moment control over when and how much suction is applied. Transparent construction allows visual monitoring of aspirated fluids as they pass through the handle.

      Key Features

      • Rigid curved design for precise directional control during oral suctioning
      • Large-bore lumen for rapid clearance of thick secretions, blood, and debris
      • Bulb tip with side holes distributes suction force to reduce tissue trauma
      • Ribbed connector attaches securely to standard suction tubing
      • Available in vented (thumb control) and non-vented versions
      • Transparent clear medical-grade plastic for visual fluid monitoring
      • Single patient use

      Benefits

      • Rigid shape maintains airway access without collapsing under suction pressure
      • Large-bore design efficiently clears high-volume or viscous secretions
      • Side-hole tip configuration reduces mucosal trauma during repeated suctioning
      • Vented version provides moment-to-moment suction control without disconnection
      • Transparent body allows visual assessment of aspirated material
      • Compatible with standard suction tubing and portable or wall-mounted machines

      Clinical Applications

✔ Oral and oropharyngeal airway clearance in hospital and emergency settings
✔ Intraoperative and post-operative suctioning of blood and secretions
✔ Tracheostomy and airway management support during acute care
✔ Emergency airway clearance in pre-hospital and ambulance environments
✔ Home suction therapy for patients with neurological or swallowing impairments
✔ Dental and oral surgery procedures requiring controlled fluid removal

      Usage and Care

Connect the ribbed end of the Yankauer handle firmly to the suction tubing and confirm the connection is airtight before activating the suction machine. Set the suction machine to the prescribed or appropriate negative pressure level for the procedure. For vented versions, occlude the thumb vent to activate suction and release to interrupt — do not apply suction continuously during insertion or withdrawal to reduce mucosal trauma risk. Insert the bulb tip gently into the oral cavity and guide it to the target area using the curved profile of the handle. Withdraw while maintaining suction to clear pooled secretions. Inspect the handle for visible damage before use and replace immediately if cracking or structural compromise is present. The Yankauer suction handle is intended for single patient use only and must not be reprocessed or shared between patients.
