Why Choose Natura® Flexible Stomahesive® Barrier
This barrier combines pre-cut convenience that eliminates the need for scissors, measuring, or templates with Stomahesive® hydrocolloid that provides reliable adhesion even on moist skin. The flexible 4" × 4" wafer conforms naturally to body contours for comfortable all-day wear, while the 1¾" (45mm) flange—one of the most common coupling sizes—provides secure attachment to a wide range of Natura® pouches. The result is faster, easier barrier changes with dependable protection for routine ostomy care, perfect for users with stable 1" stomas who want simplicity without compromising quality.

Understanding Pre-Cut vs. Cut-to-Fit
Pre-Cut (This Product):
- Pros: Faster application, no cutting required, consistent manufactured opening, travel-friendly, caregiver-friendly
- Cons: Must have stoma exactly matching size, less flexibility for irregular shapes, limited to available sizes
- Best For: Stable stomas that measure 1" consistently, users wanting simplicity, experienced ostomates with predictable needs
Cut-to-Fit:
- Pros: Customizable to any stoma size/shape, accommodates size changes, works for irregular/oval stomas
- Cons: Requires measuring and cutting, needs scissors and tools, takes more time, potential for cutting errors
- Best For: Changing stoma sizes, irregular shapes, users needing flexibility
Choosing Pre-Cut: If your stoma consistently measures approximately 1" (25mm) in diameter and you want the convenience of ready-to-use barriers, pre-cut is excellent. If your stoma is larger, smaller, oval, or changes size, you'll need cut-to-fit barriers instead.
Understanding Stomahesive® Technology
What is Stomahesive®?
Stomahesive® is ConvaTec's original hydrocolloid adhesive formulation, developed for general ostomy care:
Reliable Adhesion: Bonds well to peristomal skin, including skin with some moisture present—more forgiving than adhesives requiring perfectly dry surfaces.
Skin Protection: Creates protective barrier between stoma output and vulnerable peristomal skin, preventing contact dermatitis.
Gentle Removal: Formulated to remove cleanly without excessive skin trauma or leaving stubborn residue.
Flexible Yet Stable: Maintains adhesion while conforming to body movement.
Appropriate For: Formed to semi-formed output (colostomy primary), standard moisture conditions, routine wear times of 3-5 days.
Stomahesive® vs. Durahesive®
Stomahesive® (This Product):
- General-purpose hydrocolloid
- Tan/beige color
- Appropriate for formed to semi-formed output
- Standard wear time (3-5 days typical)
- Best for colostomy with formed output
- More economical for lower-moisture situations
- Excellent baseline option for routine needs
Durahesive®:
- Extended-wear hydrocolloid for liquid/high-output
- White or tan color (depending on variant)
- Engineered for liquid output resistance
- Longer wear time (5-7 days with liquid output)
- Best for ileostomy or high-output situations
- Essential when liquid erosion is a concern
Choose Stomahesive® (This Product) if:
- You have colostomy with formed output
- Your output is not liquid or high-volume
- You don't experience premature barrier erosion
- Standard wear time (3-5 days) meets your needs
- You want reliable, economical routine protection
Choose Durahesive® if:
- You have ileostomy with liquid output
- High-output situations (>1000mL daily)
- You experience frequent barrier erosion
- You need extended wear time beyond 5 days
Flexible Wafer Technology
What Makes This Barrier "Flexible"?
The flexible construction refers to the thin, pliable wafer that moves naturally with your body:
Thin Profile: Thinner than standard rigid wafers, creating more natural movement.
Conforming Design: Bends and flexes with body contours without losing adhesion.
Comfort Benefits:
- Less "board-like" feeling
- More natural sensation during wear
- Reduces pressure points
- Better for users who move frequently
Maintained Protection: Flexibility doesn't compromise the protective seal—Stomahesive® adhesion remains effective.
1¾" (45mm) Flange Sizing
Why 1¾" (45mm)?
The 1¾" (45mm) flange is one of the most common sizes in the Natura® system:
Standard Size: Appropriate for small to medium stomas up to approximately 1-1⅛"
Wide Compatibility: Works with extensive range of Natura® 45mm pouches (drainable, closed, urostomy)
Compact Profile: Smaller than 57mm or 70mm flanges—more discreet
Common Availability: Most retailers stock 45mm products
Natura® 1¾" (45mm) Coupling System
This barrier uses ConvaTec's Natura® 1¾" (45mm) coupling.
Compatible With:
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm drainable pouches
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm closed pouches
- ConvaTec Natura® 45mm urostomy pouches
- All Natura® 45mm pouch styles
NOT Compatible With:
- Other ConvaTec flange sizes (38mm, 57mm, 70mm)
- Other manufacturers' systems (Hollister, Coloplast, etc.)
- Hollister New Image™ 1¾" (different coupling mechanism)
⚠ Important: While multiple manufacturers make 1¾" (45mm) products, they use different coupling mechanisms and are NOT interchangeable.
Usage & Application
Preparing Skin:
- Cleanse peristomal skin with mild soap and water
- Pat completely dry—any moisture reduces adhesion
- Assess skin condition before each barrier application
- Apply skin prep if recommended by clinician
Verifying Fit:
- Before opening package, confirm your stoma measures approximately 1" (25mm)
- If stoma is larger or smaller, you'll need a different barrier size
- Pre-cut barriers work best when stoma matches opening size closely
- Barrier should have approximately ⅛" gap around stoma (slightly larger opening than stoma)
Applying the Barrier:
- Remove barrier from packaging
- Remove paper backing
- Warm flexible barrier between hands for 15-30 seconds—becomes more pliable
- Center pre-cut 1" opening over stoma
- Ensure opening accommodates entire stoma with small gap
- Press barrier onto skin, starting at stoma and working outward
- Smooth with hand for 30-60 seconds, allowing body heat to activate adhesion
- The flexible wafer should conform naturally to body contours
- Ensure no air bubbles or wrinkles
- Press firmly around all edges
Coupling the Pouch:
- Align pouch flange with barrier coupling ring
- Press around entire ring perimeter until you hear/feel audible "click"
- Gently tug pouch to confirm secure attachment
- If using belt, thread through belt tabs and adjust
Daily Monitoring:
- Check barrier edges daily for signs of lifting
- Monitor peristomal skin condition when changing barriers
- Verify that 1" opening continues to fit properly (stomas can change size)
When to Replace:
- Typical wear time: 3-5 days (depends on output type and skin condition)
- Replace if barrier edges begin to lift
- Replace if leakage occurs
- Replace if skin irritation develops
When Pre-Cut May Not Be Appropriate
Consider Cut-to-Fit Instead if:
- Your stoma measures significantly different from 1"
- Your stoma is oval or irregularly shaped
- Your stoma size fluctuates day-to-day
- You're in early post-operative period when stoma is changing size
- You need custom fitting for unique anatomy
Pre-cut barriers work beautifully for stable, round stomas that consistently measure the specified size. For other situations, cut-to-fit barriers provide necessary flexibility.
