    • Why High-Output Pouches for Ileostomy and Short-Bowel Syndrome

Standard ostomy pouches typically hold 300-500 mL of output, requiring emptying every 2-4 hours for users with high-volume liquid output. Ileostomy patients, particularly those with short-bowel syndrome, jejunostomies, or recent surgical resections, can produce 1000-2000+ mL of liquid effluent daily—overwhelming standard pouches and forcing constant bathroom visits. High-output pouches feature reinforced construction, larger capacity, and specialized drainage systems designed to handle liquid, high-volume output without compromising barrier seal or pouch integrity. The extended capacity reduces emptying frequency from 8-12 times daily to 4-6 times, dramatically improving quality of life. For users struggling with dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or sleep disruption from frequent output, high-output pouches provide the capacity and durability needed to manage challenging ostomy situations while maintaining skin protection and dignity.

      Key Features

      • High-output design: specifically engineered for large-volume liquid effluent
      • Extended capacity: significantly larger than standard pouches for fewer emptyings
      • 2-piece Click coupling: audible/tactile confirmation of secure pouch attachment
      • 50 mm (red-coded) coupling: color-coded system for easy size identification
      • Opaque finish: discreet coverage prevents visibility of contents
      • Full-circle filter: integrated gas venting prevents ballooning despite high liquid volume
      • Drainable outlet: reinforced tap/closure designed for frequent emptying
      • Textile backing: soft, water-resistant fabric for comfort and noise reduction
      • Low-profile design: despite larger capacity, maintains reasonable profile under clothing
      • Latex-free construction: safe for latex-sensitive users
      • Box of 10: economical supply for high-output users

      Benefits

      • Reduces emptying frequency with extended capacity—fewer bathroom interruptions
      • Manages liquid, high-volume output more reliably than standard pouches
      • Click coupling ensures secure attachment despite heavier pouch weight
      • Prevents nighttime disruptions with capacity for longer intervals
      • Opaque design maintains dignity and discretion with liquid contents
      • Full-circle filter prevents ballooning even with high gas production
      • Textile backing enhances comfort during extended wear
      • Two-piece convenience: change pouches without removing barrier

      Clinical Applications

✓ High-output ileostomy: >1000-1500 mL daily liquid output
✓ Short-bowel syndrome: reduced intestinal length causing high liquid volume
✓ Jejunostomy: proximal stoma with very liquid, high-volume output
✓ Post-operative high output: temporary increased output after bowel surgery
✓ Inflammatory bowel disease flares: acute periods of increased liquid drainage
✓ Hydration challenges: users struggling with dehydration from frequent output
✓ Sleep disruption: overnight output requiring frequent awakening to empty
✓ Active lifestyles: extended capacity for work, travel, or activities without constant emptying

      Usage & Application

For individuals with ileostomies or other high-output stomas producing large volumes of liquid effluent, typically exceeding 1000 mL daily.

System compatibility: This high-output pouch requires a SenSura Mio baseplate (barrier) with matching 50 mm (red-coded) coupling. Ensure you have the correct baseplate before ordering pouches.

      Initial setup with baseplate:

      1. Cleanse peristomal skin with warm water and pat completely dry
      2. Prepare SenSura Mio baseplate per manufacturer instructions (cut-to-fit or pre-sized)
      3. Apply baseplate to dry peristomal skin following proper technique
      4. Ensure baseplate is fully adhered before attaching pouch

Attaching the high-output pouch (Click coupling):

      1. Hold the pouch with both hands, aligning the coupling ring with the baseplate
      2. Position the pouch coupling over the baseplate coupling
      3. Press firmly around the entire circumference
      4. Listen for the audible "click" and feel for tactile confirmation of secure attachment
      5. Gently tug on the pouch to verify it's locked in place—it should not detach
      6. The Click coupling is more secure than standard two-piece systems, important for heavier pouch weight

      Managing high-output situations:

      • Empty frequently: Despite larger capacity, empty when 1/3 to 1/2 full to prevent excessive weight on barrier
      • Monitor for dehydration: High output can cause fluid and electrolyte loss—maintain hydration per healthcare provider guidance
      • Track output volume: Keep records of daily output to share with healthcare team
      • Overnight management: The extended capacity may allow sleeping 4-6 hours without emptying, but some users still connect to bedside drainage for uninterrupted sleep
      • Dietary considerations: Work with dietitian on strategies to thicken output or slow transit time

      Emptying the pouch:

      1. Sit on toilet or position over toilet bowl
      2. Open the drainable outlet (tap or fold closure depending on model)
      3. Allow contents to drain completely into toilet
      4. The liquid consistency of high output drains quickly and completely
      5. Wipe the inside of the outlet clean
      6. Close and secure the outlet firmly

Filter maintenance: The full-circle filter is designed to handle the high gas production common with liquid output. If the filter becomes wet or clogged:

      • Pat the filter area gently with tissue to absorb excess moisture
      • The large filter area provides redundancy if portions become saturated
      • Replace pouch if filter fails and ballooning occurs

      Pouch change frequency:

      • Change pouches every 1-2 days or as needed based on wear
      • High liquid output may require more frequent changes than solid output
      • The baseplate typically remains in place 3-5 days (shorter than extended-wear barriers due to high output)
      • Never compromise barrier integrity—change if you notice erosion near stoma

      To remove and replace pouch:

      1. Gently push down on the baseplate while lifting the pouch coupling upward
      2. The Click coupling releases—baseplate stays in place
      3. Clean any output residue from baseplate coupling
      4. Attach fresh high-output pouch following the steps above

Working with healthcare team: High-output situations often require medical management beyond pouch selection:

      • Medications to slow intestinal transit (loperamide, codeine)
      • IV or oral rehydration solutions
      • Dietary modifications (low fiber, specific carbohydrates)
      • Regular lab monitoring for electrolyte imbalances
      • Coordinate ostomy supplies with overall high-output management plan

      Important capacity management:

      • Never allow pouch to become completely full—excessive weight can pull on barrier
      • Aim to empty at 300-400 mL even though capacity is larger
      • Monitor barrier seal closely—high liquid output is more challenging for adhesion
      • Use barrier extenders or seals if experiencing premature barrier failures
