Ramp Length & Slope
Ramp length should be selected based on the vertical rise and the maximum slope appropriate for the mobility device and intended use. PVI recommends using the least possible slope and states that an occupied portable ramp should not exceed a 2:12 slope for loading a person into a vehicle.
For general accessibility planning, a 1:12 slope is gentler and commonly used as an accessibility benchmark, but the correct slope must follow the applicable regulations and the mobility device manufacturer's limits.
Do not choose a ramp based on capacity alone. The ramp must also be long enough for the rise and suitable for the wheelchair or scooter's wheel configuration.
Usage and Safety Information
Inspect the ramp before every use. Confirm the ramp is fully unfolded, the panels are correctly aligned, the security pins are installed, the top hook is securely positioned and the bottom of the ramp is stable.
Use the ramp only on a firm, level and suitable surface. Ensure the total loaded weight of the mobility device and occupant does not exceed the applicable ramp capacity.
When using the ramp with an occupied wheelchair or scooter, always have a qualified assistant present. Follow the mobility device manufacturer's maximum slope requirements and PVI's ramp instructions.
Keep the ramp surface clean and dry when possible. Do not use the ramp if the aluminum structure, hinges, security pins, hook, side edges or traction surface are damaged.
Use the closure strap to secure the folded ramp during transport. The Wheel-A-Bout is long and heavy; make sure the person moving it can safely handle the folded ramp.
